Tom Winans is Concentrum Inc., a professional software engineering and technology diligence consultancy. I work with senior management teams to help align product and technology strategies to business strategies, help Product Management and Software Engineering teams to align their goals and objectives to those strategies, and provide execution guidance to those teams. My work usually requires me to engage with Product Management and Engineering teams to model new software product families, plan product roadmaps, and establish product-specific program management. I frequently work with product and application/technology architecture teams to identify functional and technical product requirements, construct conceptual application and technology architectures, perform prototype work to identify key technical risks to be managed during software production, project plan, and develop software. I also perform product/project/technology reviews and diligence work. I don't come with a large team and long lead-times for impact. I add value quickly by assessing the traceability of technology-related organizational structure and project work to corporate business goals and objectives, challenging comfortable (and often unstated) assumptions about best practices and architecture, outlining plausible business scenarios and options to help technologists see the larger business picture, and working as a sounding board to corporate and technology leadership teams to help them establish a culture of accomplishment without compromising software engineering discipline.
